Nuclear Negotiation: Making and Breaking the Iran Deal
Join Harvard's Davis Center for a panel on the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and the road ahead for all parties to the deal.
The U.S. government announced in May 2018 that the country would withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The move alienated not only Iran but especially American allies on the other side of the Atlantic who insisted that the deal was crucial to European security interests.
U.S. President Donald Trump, disregarding the pleas by Europeans and critics from his own country alike, announced in a tweet, "Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States,“ effectively forcing international companies to choose between the Iranian and the American market. While foreign ministers in the EU had promised they would resist the sanctions with a blocking statute, many companies have already suspended their business in Iran until further notice.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif thwarted Trump’s plan to negotiate a better deal by announcing that the country would not "waste its time“ and warned that the U.S. decision would threaten regional stability.
The battle lines seem to be drawn, which forces us to ask: Where do we go from here? What are the alternatives to the deal? What are the different parties really trying to achieve and how can we move forward in preserving peace with Iran, in avoiding nuclear proliferation and further escalation of tensions between all parties?
Speakers:
Seyed Hossein Mousavian, Middle East security and nuclear policy specialist, Princeton University
