The author argues that despite Donald Trump’s pro-Russia reputation, Moscow is concerned about U.S. foreign policy under the new president. There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding what Trump will do as president, particularly when it comes to foreign policy, on which his statements have been less than clear. Trump's advisors and aides also span a wide range of often conflicting views on these issues. In the longer term, there are trends in American politics that Russian can take comfort in, such as a new zeal for isolationism and the fact that globalization has not been as much of “an unalloyed boon for the United States as some wish to portray it.” In the near term, however, Russia has little reason to hope for any major breakthroughs with the new president, "regardless of what he said during the campaign.”
