Musings … ‘Russiagate’ Hysteria

June 02, 2018
Jack Matlock

This is a summary of an article originally published on the author's personal website, JackMatlock.com.

The author writes that Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election has become increasingly accepted as "fact" by both the media and Congress; this, he argues, is not the most important aspect of that election. "The most important fact, obscured in ‘Russiagate’ hysteria, is that Americans elected Donald Trump president under the terms set forth in a constitution written and approved by Americans." While the author did not vote for Trump, he argues that charges of Russian interference or Russia-inflicted damage to U.S. democracy are "ludicrous, pathetic and shameful." Dangerous, too, he adds, as making an enemy of the world's other nuclear superpower is the closest thing he can imagine to "political insanity." The hysteria of "Russiagate" diverts attention from real threats, the author argues, and urges that Trump and Putin be encouraged to restore cooperation on nuclear safety issues. "This is in the vital interest of both the United States and Russia.”
