Join the NYU Jordan Center for a panel event entitled “The Use of History in Shaping Identity: Russia Under Putin."

The enlargement of the EU and NATO did not diminish the role that the past plays in Russia’s foreign relations. On the contrary. History—in particular the history of the World War II—has frequently been used as a point of reference in EU-Russia relations. A recent example of this can be seen in the widespread use of historical references by both Russia and the EU in the crisis in Ukraine. This presentation will describe how history was instrumentalized during the Ukraine crisis, and how Russia turned the memory of World War II into a useful tool in its campaign against Europe.
